Deirdre Zahl’s Vintage Eye

In regards to fashion, statement pieces are a must. The Candy Shop Vintage collection by Deirdre Zahl is full of unique designs that will elevate any wardrobe and be the topic of conversation. After leaving the Big Apple, a place she has always called home, Zahl took an inspiring leap of faith by beginning a new life in the warming city of Charleston, SC. Thanks to the approachable up-and-coming Holy City where entrepreneurial businesses are flourishing left and right, the opportunity to create her own line of vintage jewelry became a reality.

We were lucky enough to get a sneak peak into her private home office and learn some more about her thriving jewelry line. Here is what she had to say…

What inspired you to start your own collection?

It was hard having one of everything. There were certain styles that I wanted to tweak or change or wish existed that didn’t. Most of the pieces I collected were made here in the United States in the 50s through the 80s in Providence Rhode Island. I figured there were probably still people there who could make me one or two pieces. I wanted to be able to design pieces and I wanted to find the right people to make them. Before I knew it, it grew into a collection.

What is one of your biggest accomplishments?

I’ve gotten to sell out in some pretty big department stores in New York. I’ve done trunk sales at Bloomingdales and I’m doing a trunk show at Henry Bendels. To get in and sell in New York is a great opportunity. I do have a ton of clients in the south too. Maybe in a few years I’ll open a store in Charleston. I would love to have a branded space that’s my own because it is important for people to pick up the jewelry and try it on.

Are you working on new pieces right now?

I’m working on a new collection for the spring but I have updated some current pieces with new colors for the fall. One of the themes I’m working on for next year is equestrian, I find that whole aesthetic really inspiring.

Do you have any hobbies?

I used to ride horses and I really want to take that up again. I  just haven’t be able to wrap my head around doing that right now but hopefully I will be able to soon. Other than that I was able to turn my hobby of vintage jewelry collecting into a business. What should be free time I end up going through all my vintage pieces and looking for new pieces. In a sense it doesn’t really feel like a job and for that I’m truly lucky.
