👨🍳🧑🍳 Happy 4th of July, Chefs!
Few things feel more American than a backyard burger sizzling over charcoal, cold drink nearby, toppings lined up, and someone very confidently saying, “I’ve got the grill.”
So we teamed up with YouTube BBQ sensation Fork and Ember to get the lowdown on building the perfect American hamburger.
You know the one: juicy, two-zone grilled, tucked into toasted buns with melty cheese, crisp toppings, and enough backyard swagger to headline any Fourth of July cookout.

The Perfect American Burger
Recipe By: Fork and Embers
🍔 Fun Fact: Americans grill billions of burgers each year, and on the Fourth, that backyard sizzle basically becomes the unofficial soundtrack of summer.
WATCH The Video
1 lb ground chuck or 80/20 ground beef
American cheese slices (don’t get fancy)
Soft white buns (not brioche, we’re not at a bistro)
Thin tomato slices, salted
Onion rounds, also thin (we’re not building a skyscraper)
Dill pickles
Iceberg lettuce leaf
Yellow mustard
Ketchup
Step By Step
Prep
1️⃣ Shape the beef into two generous 8 oz patties, working the meat as little as possible so the burgers stay tender. Place them in the fridge while you get the grill ready.
2️⃣ Slice the tomatoes and onions nice and thin. Give the tomatoes a little sprinkle of salt to wake them up, then set your toppings aside so everything is ready when burger hour hits.
Technique
3️⃣ Fire up your Weber Kettle for two-zone cooking: one side hot and ready for searing, the other cooler for a slower, gentler cook. Use about half to a full chimney of lit charcoal, then place the grate on top.
4️⃣ Season the patties with salt and pepper right before they go on the grill.
5️⃣ Start the burgers over indirect heat and let them cook most of the way through there. This keeps things juicy, controlled, and free from flare-up chaos.
6️⃣ While the burgers cook, toast the buns quickly over the hot side. Keep an eye on them, because golden can turn to “oops” very quickly.
7️⃣ Once the burgers reach about 150°F internally, move them to the hot side for the grand finale. Sear until you get that beautiful crust, then add the cheese and let it melt into all the right places.
Build
8️⃣ Bottom bun → mustard → pickles → burger → ketchup → onions → tomato → lettuce → top bun.
9️⃣ Serve immediately, preferably with plenty of napkins and the kind of confidence only a properly grilled burger can inspire.
