Ingredients

For The Sandwich
  1. 2 slices bread

  2. 1–1½ tbsp butter, or enough for toasting

  3. 3 thin slices ham, about 3–4 oz

  4. 4 slices Tomme de Savoie, about 4–5½ oz

For The Béchamel
  1. 2 tbsp butter

  2. ¼ cup flour

  3. 1¼ cups milk, or enough to reach your preferred consistency

  4. Salt, to taste, optional

For The Top
  1. Grated Tomme de Savoie, as needed

Step By Step

1️⃣ Make The Béchamel
  1. Melt the butter in a small saucepan. Stir in the flour and cook briefly until smooth. Gradually add the milk, stirring continuously, until the sauce is creamy and thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. Season with salt if needed.

2️⃣ Build The Sandwich
  1. Layer the ham and sliced Tomme de Savoie between the two slices of bread.

3️⃣ Toast Until Golden
  1. Butter the outside of the sandwich and toast until the bread is deeply golden and the cheese inside begins to melt.

4️⃣ Add The Béchamel
  1. Spread a generous layer of béchamel over the top of the toasted sandwich.

5️⃣ Finish With Cheese
  1. Cover the béchamel with grated Tomme de Savoie and heat until the cheese is completely melted and beginning to brown.

6️⃣ Serve Immediately
  1. Cut it while it’s hot and serve straight away. Weekend brunch officially handled.
